Posnick Chapter 10: Nasal Airway Considerations in the Evaluation and Treatment of Dentofacial Deformities

Nasal airway obstruction and dentofacial deformities are closely related and should be evaluated together. Chronic mouth breathing and altered jaw posture may influence facial growth, occlusion, and long-term function. Therefore, airway assessment should be incorporated into orthognathic surgical planning rather than treated as a secondary issue. Le Fort I osteotomy offers an important opportunity to correct both skeletal deformity and nasal airway problems simultaneously. Management of septal deviation, turbinate hypertrophy, and nasal floor abnormalities can improve breathing, facial balance, and quality of life. Multidisciplinary planning is essential to prevent compromised postoperative functional and aesthetic outcomes.
