Orthodontic Camouflage of a Skeletal Class II with Gummy Smile, Vertical Maxillary Excess, and Hyperdivergent Facial Type
Professor Yuh-Jia Hsieh presented the orthodontic camouflage management of a skeletal Class II patient with gummy smile, vertical maxillary excess, and a hyperdivergent facial pattern. The lecture emphasized a comprehensive etiologic diagnosis of skeletal, dental, soft-tissue, and functional factors before treatment selection. Through detailed cephalometric analysis and biomechanical considerations, Professor Hsieh demonstrated how total-arch intrusion with temporary anchorage devices (TADs) can reduce gingival display, improve lip competence, and induce favorable mandibular autorotation in carefully selected patients. The lecture also highlighted the indications, limitations, risks, and decision-making process when choosing orthodontic camouflage instead of orthognathic surgery.
