Short-term and Long-term Outcomes of MMA Surgery
Maxillomandibular advancement (MMA) is an effective treatment for obstructive sleep apnea, particularly in patients with skeletal dentofacial deficiency. This presentation by Dr. Po-Fang Wang reviews the short-term and long-term outcomes of MMA surgery using polysomnographic and airway measurements. Eighty-four patients were evaluated, with 69 completing long-term follow-up. MMA produced sustained improvements in the apnea–hypopnea index and expanded the pharyngeal airway across multiple anatomical levels. Increased posterior airway dimensions correlated with both short-term and long-term reductions in disease severity. Adequate advancement of both jaws created a shorter, wider, and more uniform airway, supporting durable functional improvement and favorable treatment outcomes over time.
